| History of Hawthorne The community of Hawthorne is located on a peninsula with the community bordered on three sides by Middle River, Cow Pens Creek and Dark Head Cove. Whitethorn, Waters Watch and Kingston Park are the waterfront areas of the peninsula and the entire community has easy access to boating, fishing, and waterfront recreation. Initial construction of Hawthorne began in 1952 and by the end of the 1970's the community had grown to a total of 1500 colonial style homes and a small apartment complex that joined the 105 original waterfront homes on the peninsula. Originally built with baby boomers in mind, the community provided homes during the industrial boom of the 50's to the 70's. In recent years, Hawthorne has experienced resurgence in new home owners who are upwardly mobile, multi cultured and family oriented. The Hawthorne community has three waterfront parks (Hawthorne/Kingston/Dark Head) which were created and maintained by the residents of Hawthorne until being integrated into the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks system. These three parks provide both waterfront and family oriented recreation. A fourth playground is provided as part of the Hawthorne Elementary School. The Hawthorne Elementary School provides quality elementary education and is the center for family oriented activities, community meetings and recreation. Many residents use Hawthorne's own shopping center but are also provided easy access to major industry, shopping districts, restaurants and entertainment venues in the Baltimore area by the use of major roadways and bus routes surrounding the area. In July of 2005, Hawthorne was designated as a waterfront destination and part of Baltimore County's Renaissance Development. |
